Vancouver Island University offers a Master of Community Planning Program, the first cohort having entered in September 2015. Our program focuses on: - Small city and town planning - Community and urban design, including a strong GIS component - Rural/urban interface planning - First Nations planning (with attention to the issues relevant to the First Nations of Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia) - Sustainable economic issues, including tourism - Emerging issues such as climate change and planning for post-fossil fuel communities This intensive program combines research, applied learning, and interactions with the professional planning community to assist students in gaining the skills, abilities, and knowledge necessary to advance a successful career as a Planner.

Duties:

Prepare and deliver classes, design and grade student assignments and tests, assess and evaluate student achievement. Ensure that there is a high level of integration with other course offerings and the guiding principles of the program.

The successful candidate will teach in the Community Design Studio (PLAN 504 - team teaching), and may be considered for Public Consultation (PLAN 601), Ethics (PLAN 503), and elective courses in the MCP Program. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a modest scholarship agenda with applied scholarship a central element of that work.

 

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; experience and expertise in teaching post-secondary courses, knowledge of community planning theory, a strong focus on teaching and student learning and responsiveness to diverse learning styles, and cultural and academic backgrounds; a record of scholarly activity; a successful career in community planning practice, including demonstrated skills in community design and public consultation, and demonstrated competency working in a team oriented environment; a demonstrated history of community engagement; membership (or demonstrated eligibility for membership) in the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters and/or a doctorate in urban/regional planning; prior experience teaching related courses; a progressive range of peer-reviewed papers, articles and conference presentations; previous work, in the Canadian planning field, for a municipality and/or multi-disciplinary consulting firm; ideally, previous work with First Nations and experience dealing with cross-cultural experiences; knowledge of coastal British Columbia; demonstrated ability to collaborate, to lead planning teams, to innovate, and build networks within academic and external communities.
