Position Overview

The Biogeoscience Institute in the Office of the Vice President, Research is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Facility Maintenance Operator.

This position is responsible for the ongoing Maintenance & Operation of The Barrier Lake Field Station in Kananaskis Country located 80 kms west of Calgary and the RB Miller Station in the Sheep River Provincial Park located 110 kms southwest of Calgary. This position is sponsored by the Office of the Vice-President (Research), but primarily reports to the Facilities Management's Zone 4 & 6 Facility Manager. This position performs installations, maintenance, and repairs of all plumbing, heating, gas piping, and other related equipment at a certified trade level.

The Facility Maintenance Operator oversees the maintenance and operation of all buildings as well as maintaining the grounds (lawn care and snow removal). This position ensures that all heating, plumbing, electrical, and appliances are functional and maintained. This position is also responsible for ensuring the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all plumbing and mechanical systems. This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 meters, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms that may require performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE:
    • Completing building checks, testing/operation and maintenance of Water Treatment Plant, lighting
    • Maintaining safety systems
  • CUSTODIAL
    • Completing floor care in common areas, washrooms, refuse and recycling containers
    • Buffing floors
    • Striping & refinishing floor
  • SAFETY
    • Attending quarterly staff safety orientation/fire drill, annual fire inspection with local Fire Marshall
    • Working in conjunction with Environment Health and Safety, Campus Security and Emergency Management
    • Ensuring that the site is secure (i.e. doors are secured as required) at the end of his/her shift
  • GROUNDS
    • Seasonal startup & shut down of housing
    • Snow removal (sidewalks, roadways, parking areas)
  • ON SITE TRADES REPAIRS
    • Assisting in scheduling campus trades for maintenance and repairs beyond scope & legal limits of onsite personnel
    • Assisting with long term infrastructure planning in conjunction with campus facilities management/ campus planning
    • Ensuring that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order
    • Meeting all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation
    • Ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Provincial or interprovincial Plumbing Trade Certification with 3 - 5 years of experience
  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Gas-fitting and Cross Connection Control Testing Certificates
  • Experience in an institutional setting would be an asset
  • Must have a good working knowledge of the Canadian Plumbing Code, Canadian Electrical, National Building, and National Fire Codes
  • Must have mechanical ability, be able to use hand and power tools, be able to work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude
  • Must have the ability to work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner
  • Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends
  • Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Must be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices
  • Must hold a valid minimum Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with less than 7 demerit points (Learners, probationary, graduated license, or motorcycle/moped only license will not be acceptable. A drivers abstract will be requested)
  • Must obtain WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods within 6 months of hire if not already in possession of certification
  • Must have Standard level First Aid, with Level C CPR/AED
