Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Reference no. 274/0216

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and enjoys a prestigious reputation internationally. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music (SCM) was established in 1915 and has a long list of distinguished alumni. The SCM is located in Macquarie Street in the heart of Sydney in world-class refurbished heritage facilities that include four major concert halls. It actively collaborates with leading international music conservatories and universities, and enjoys a range of long-term national collaborations that include Opera Australia, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Services International and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

SCM fosters a culture of research excellence, advancing studies in the discipline of music through creative research (performance and composition), music scholarship (music history, music theory, ethnomusicology, experimental research in music) and music education. SCM researchers perform and publish widely, and also foster public understanding of music through public lectures and workshops, reviewing, and other media appearances.

The SCM prepares gifted students of all backgrounds and nationalities for a professional career in music through artistic, innovative performance and scholarship at the highest level. A recognised leader in musical education, the SCM offers degrees in Performance (including historically informed performance), Composition, Music Education, Musicology, Jazz, Contemporary Music Practice, Conducting and Opera. In addition, the SCM contributes a vibrant generalist program to students of the University via its Arts Music Unit. Throughout their study, students are encouraged to perform and/or have their music presented in concerts in Sydney, across NSW, nationally and internationally. The SCM also has a very active and highly regarded outreach program that currently includes over 450 recitals and concerts each year.

The new Dean and Head of School will provide leadership and support for the SCM’s teaching and research activities and will be responsible for the general management of the SCM, including its staff, finances and physical resources. The appointee will be an outstanding musical educator with a distinguished record as a performer researcher, composer researcher, musicologist, or music education researcher, who respects and understands the range of scholarly interests represented in the SCM and has the capacity to promote them. She/he will have a track record of extensive management experience - ideally within the higher education sector - and will have developed high level management skills, including the ability to effectively manage significant budgets and the full range of HR matters. The capacity to think strategically and oversee strategy development and implementation is also required. In addition, the appointee will be capable of providing leadership and vision, including nationally through their extensive knowledge and experience of the Australian arts and cultural sector, and be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and team building skills.

The Dean and Head of School must have the capacity to actively contribute to the work of the University’s Senior Executive Group via its committee structure.
