Position Summary: 
Reporting to the Managing Director, Faculty-based Programs and Major Gifts and to the Dean, develop, plan and implement strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding special and major gifts for the Faculty of Science. The Associate Director, Development manages a portfolio of prospects in order to secure/advance major philanthropic gifts to the Faculty. Manage professional and support staff, and has oversight for alumni relations programs. Identify, recruit and manage leadership volunteers.
Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Develop major gift fundraising strategies and timetables, in collaboration with the Managing Director, Faculty-based Programs and Major Gifts and the Dean to secure gifts of $100,000 or more from top prospects. This includes providing strategic development support for visits by the Dean, and other senior administrators.
  • Develop strategic annual plan for approval and provide progress report towards goals.
  • Manage a prospect portfolio (approx. 100 – 150) and carry out significant steps (moves) in accordance with a strategy designed to result in increased philanthropic support for the Faculty of Science and McGill University.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit prospects capable of contributing special gifts ($25,000 - $99,999) and major gifts of $100,000 or more to Faculty and University priorities. Through personal visits, identify and qualify individuals to determine capacity, inclination and interests in providing special and major gift support to the Faculty. Evaluate and recommend appropriate next steps for newly qualified potential donors and current donors.
  • Manage, in collaboration with University Advancement Alumni Relations, organization of special events geared to major gifts prospects and to enhancing ongoing alumni relations with this particular group of prospects.
  • Manage professional and support staff. Participate in the recruitment and training of new staff, and in establishing performance standards/evaluation for direct reports.
  • Manage volunteer networks that assist in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospects.
  • Participate in Prospect Management System; file timely and appropriate contact reports, recording of proposals, etc.
  • Work closely with University Advancement Communications to ensure that messages and communications (case statements, proposals, bulleting, donor reports) are consistent with the University’s case for support and fundraising priorities and with colleagues throughout the University Advancement Development Office, including other Faculty-based staff to achieve university-wide fundraising goals.
  • Undertake special projects.
Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 
Proven experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in a higher education or science setting. Results-driven and client-focused professional with the ability to solicit, negotiate, maximize and close major gifts and to identify and develop relationships with new top prospects. Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate others and to work autonomously and as a part of a team with excellent interpersonal skills and savvy. Ability to identify, recruit, and manage a network of key fundraising volunteers. Strategic thinker with an ability to develop and implement plans and carry on multiple projects simultaneously, and to adapt to changing circumstances. Ability to communicate effectively and to interact with top donors while maintaining a high level of confidentiality. Excellent problem solving, priority setting, analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work in a PC environment, using MS Office, and client-server database software. English spoken and written; French spoken.
